On (Designer) Beauty

Apr 30, 2012

Good evening!

It's been a few days! I spent the second half of last week moving out of the apartment I've lived in for the past three years and it was exhausting. (I barely had time to check my emails!) But I'm all moved out and back home :)

Did my last bit of big city shopping while I was in TO and picked up the most gorgeous turquoise nail polish, Dior Saint Tropez. I will admit it was quite a bit more expensive than your standard Sally Hansen or OPI, but it is beautiful. The bottle, the polish, the packaging - it all shows a considerable difference from the usual nail brands. (You can see it on my nails in the photo below!)

What are your thoughts on designer beauty products? Dior, Chanel, Burberry, so many design houses have makeup collections now, and some have become enormously popular in the beauty world. But do you think they live up to their hype? Or can you get beauty items that work just as well in Sephora or the drug store?

Well I kind of already know the answer to that last question. Sephora has tons and tons of absolutely fabulous products, and if you do your research, you can find many inexpensive but excellent products in the drugstore.

I guess my real question is, do you buy designer beauty? Why or why not?

Ten Ways to Have a Good Day

Apr 25, 2012

Good morning!

I saw this post on Mackenzie's blog on Monday and it was just too good not to share. But since I'm not a coffee drinker, I had to make my own :)

Hope this is a little pick me up for the Wednesday blah's!

Good evening!

Nothing makes me smile more than a pretty print, and Joana & Luis of Vapor Qualquer have some of the loveliest prints! Featuring pretty watercolours and fun text, their work would spice up any gallery :)

My favourite is "Let's Swim to the Moon", but the "I Can See" print is just so cute! You can check out their shop from any of the links above, or you can click right here! I love finding unique shops that sell really fun things and Vapor Qualquer is just that :)

Fields in France

Apr 23, 2012

Good evening!

Today was one of those uninspiring ones. It rained all day (I might have even seen some snow) and there was not a ray of sunshine to be seen. It is days like today that have me dreaming of far away places :)

Mmmm....isn't France beautiful?? And yes, I took all those photos from the Wikipedia page. I'm not missing this school thing where we had to cite every last silly thing and saying you got something from Wikipedia was like saying you found it in a dump. No sir-ee. I'm liking this graduate life quite a lot thank you :)

Hope your week is off to a lovely start!

Cards for Mom

Apr 20, 2012

Good morning!

I've caught whatever bug it is that's going around at the moment. No bueno. Had just no motivation to do anything productive yesterday, but I'm back today!

Mother's Day is just about two weeks away, and this year I planned ahead a bit and ordered my mom a pretty present for her soon-to-be-redecorated room :) Can't tell you what it is (she occasionally checks in here and I can't spoil the surprise haha) but I'll share a photo when we finish her room.

But now I have to find the dreaded card. I will never understand the prices of cards in stores, but if I'm going to spend money on one, I want it to be extra pretty and actually worth the $7. So naturally, I went to Etsy!

Most cards on Etsy cost $3-5, so with shipping it costs the same as in stores AND you get to say that it's handmade and special. Total win. I've spent some time searching, and these are my four favourite!

I just think this one is so cute :) I love saying 'marvelous mum' in a british accent haha
Marvelous Mum
Love the valley-girl text on this one :) Makes me smile.
Best Mom Everrr
Okay fine, this one is a little more expensive. But it's HAND-CUT. You ain't finding that in the drug store.
Best Mom Ever
So pretty and dainty :) Love the soft colours and image on this one.
Love You Mom
And there we have it! There are tons more on Etsy, so even if you didn't like these ones, you should still check out the selection!

Happy Friday!

Good afternoon!!

It must be that lull that happens in the later afternoon, as these desserts have me daydreaming! Chocolate, fudgey, minty, peanut-buttery goodness! Mmmmm :)

Must find something delicious for dessert tonight :)

Open Window

Apr 17, 2012

Good morning!

A couple weeks ago when we had that beautiful beautiful few days of summer weather, I opened up every window I could! Open-window-weather is my favourite after being stuck inside all winter!

There's something kind of magical about looking through an open window into all the possibilities that await :) Maybe because graduation is looming closer and closer, I'm looking everywhere for ideas for what to do with my life. There's so many possibilities out there, how does one choose?

Mmm...are you excited about open-window-weather??

They'll have to be closed up again once allergy season starts and then the crazy humidity we get in July/August, but for now, let's pretend they don't exist and just enjoy the fresh breeze :) Then we can worry about the future!

Last One!

Apr 16, 2012

Good morning!

I'm writing this post on Sunday night. As you read this, I will be writing an exam on 17th Century England. (well, if you're reading this on Monday morning between 8-11am!)

My last ever university exam. Feels a bit strange to be honest. I mean, I might end up going back to school for post-grad stuff down the line, but for now, this is my last exam ever.

And I'm really hoping I feel like that when its all over!

Be back on Tuesday with pretty things :) Now it's time to get back to studying!

Dainty Treats

Apr 12, 2012

Good morning!

I tried my first French Macarons a few weeks ago and haven't been able to them out of my head! They are the daintiest of desserts and look so chic! There are no Laduree's here in Canada, but several lovely bakeries near me sell them. I had two, raspberry and chocolate, and oh my goodness, they were delicious!

Has anyone ever tried making them before? I found this recipe by Martha Stewart, and I imagine the recipe works very well, but my skills in the kitchen are slightly lacking haha

I think that'll have to be a goal of 2012. Make a macaron, that looks and tastes good :)

Anyone else share my love of these delectable little treats?

Blue for Mama

Apr 11, 2012

Good morning!

When I was home this past weekend for Easter, we made firm-ish plans to redo my mom's room over the May long weekend :) She's been talking about it for months, but now we're finally going to buckle down and do it! haha We've got some family coming to help so it should be a lot of fun :)

No before pictures for you today, but I do have our little plan for the after!

Above are Benjamin Moore's Gossamer Blue, Ruby Red, and Graphite. A soft blue-y green for the walls, dark greyish-brown paint on the original pine floors (they're already painted and it would be a ridiculous amount of work to remove it) and cherry red accents with chunky white trim!

And of course, some inspiration images! We haven't decided on the finish for the paint on the floor, but wouldn't a glossy charcoal floor be gorgeous?? I know the one below is blue, but I just love the sheen it gives!

I have a serious weakness for giant mirrors. I think mom needs one in her life. Maybe so I can steal it someday. But it can be hers for now :)

Since the walls in our house are so wonky, we're thinking of doing a textured finish with plaster. Probably won't be faux-exposed brick, but wouldn't that be so fun??

And that's all we have for now! haha She's keeping most of her furniture and either painting it or revamping it somehow. Some crisp white bedding, pretty pictures on the walls (trying to convince her to do a big gallery wall!) and something sparkly :)

What are your thoughts?? I'll be sure to show the before pictures (when mom gives the ok!) and will definitely be sharing photos as we work on it in May!

All Lined Up

Apr 10, 2012

I wrote this post a few weeks ago, just before my little blog break. Thought it was high time to share!!

Good morning!

Yesterday I was inspired by this old post on ...love Maegan to find a new way to store my polish. I have these cute metal containers from IKEA, but it meant that my polish was hidden away and not on display. Don't hers look so pretty all lined up??

photo from ...love Maegan
So I decided my room needed a little switchup! I've had these shelves from Canadian Tire since I moved in, and I've just piled pretty paintings and things on them. The perfect new home for my polish :)

Step 1: Remove items and clean shelves! (there may have been a slight layer of dust...oops!)

Step 2: Empty polish from bin onto bed!

Step 3: Sort polish by colour! Blues & greens, pinks & reds, and neutrals.

Step 4: Fill the shelves! They look so pretty all lined up by colour :)

Step 5: Admire all the pretties :)

Thought I'd share a few of my favourite colours at the moment! This is Butter London Tart With A Heart, the most gorgeous twinkly shade! It is a bit sheer to wear by itself, but looks beyond gorgeous layered over other soft creamy colours. (Nails Inc Porchester Square is one of my faves!)

Deborah Lippmann's Happy Birthday is a glitter party in a bottle!! I got this shade for my birthday a few months ago and it is just so fun to wear!

Gosh Flamingo is the most perfect blue-y pink. I have a couple pinks in this colour family, but this one is my favourite on my skintone.

Essie A Cut Above is all different sized pink sparkles. You can build it up for full coverage, or wear a coat or two over a soft pink for a pretty feminine look :) (This and Rescue Beauty Lounge Plie were my Easter mani!)

This picture does no justice to Nails Inc Warwick Way. It is so vibrant and beautiful, the next time you're in Sephora, just go and admire it!

And last but not least, China Glaze For Audrey. The bottle looks so funny because it's one my older polishes! It is one of my absolute favourites; the colour is so pretty and it evokes lovely memories of a little blue box :)

What's your favourite shade or colour family at the moment? I've loving softer not quite pastel shades with lots of sparkles layered over top!

Hope you have a lovely day!
